The thumb draw: an introduction
The way steppe archers drew their bows, and how to start learning it safely.

The horse archers who used the bows Paragon recreates mostly drew with the thumb rather than the fingers. It suits short, strongly recurved bows and a quick, clean release.
The grip on the string
Hook the string with the thumb, below the arrow, and lock the index finger over the thumbnail. To release, relax the hold and let the string roll off the thumb.
Protect the thumb
A thumb ring, traditionally of horn, bone, leather or metal, protects the thumb and gives a crisp release. Have one fitted to your thumb before you start.
Arrow on the right
With a thumb draw a right-handed archer usually shoots with the arrow on the right of the bow, the opposite of the fingers draw. A hard-wearing arrow pass protects the riser on that side.
Start close, start light
Practise at short range with a light bow until the release is consistent. Distance and weight can come later.
